Chris Minh Doky
Born in Copenhagen in 1969, Chris Minh Doky is a Danish bassist, composer and producer coming from a family and cultural background that blends Denmark and Vietnam, active in jazz since the late 1980s. His playing, split between double bass and electric bass, sits in contemporary jazz open to acoustic forms, jazz fusion and more melodic arrangements. Chris Minh Doky released his first albums as a leader as early as 1989 with Appreciation, then The Sequel in 1990 and Letters in 1991, before developing an international trajectory between Europe, the United States and Asia. He also led the Doky Brothers project with his brother, pianist Niels Lan Doky, with the albums Doky Brothers in 1995 and Doky Brothers 2 in 1997. Over the course of his career, Chris Minh Doky has played and recorded with several leading jazz musicians and beyond, among them Mike Stern, Michael Brecker and Ryuichi Sakamoto. His discography reflects this circulation between group formats, more cinematic writing and modern production, notably Minh in 1998, Listen Up! in 2000, Cinematique in 2002, The Nomad Diaries in 2006, Scenes from a Dream in 2010, New Nordic Jazz in 2015 and Transparency in 2018. Chris Minh Doky also works for image and stage in Denmark, in a register that extends his taste for crossings between lyricism, groove and writing.
