Silje Nergaard

Born in Steinkjer, Norway, in 1966, Silje Nergaard began developing in the late 1980s a style situated between pop and vocal jazz, before gradually moving toward a more acoustic aesthetic. Her debut album, Tell Me Where You’re Going (1990), introduced her on the international stage, notably thanks to the title track recorded with guitarist Pat Metheny. Nergaard then honed a sound centered on voice, melody and a song-like format. Around the turn of the 2000s, albums such as Port of Call (2000) and At First Light (2001) confirmed this approach, often realized by small groups featuring Nordic jazz musicians like Tord Gustavsen and Jarle Vespestad. With A Thousand True Stories (2009), recorded with the Metropole Orchestra, she explored more orchestral arrangements without abandoning an intimate register. Singing primarily in English but occasionally in Norwegian, she alternates original compositions with reinterpretations of standards, performs in clubs and jazz festivals across Europe, and remains associated with a Scandinavian scene where melodic lyricism, clarity of timbre and a subdued harmonic atmosphere are central to her work.
