Sessa

Under the name Sessa, Sergio Sayeg writes from São Paulo — with a spell in New York — music that remains rooted in Brazilian song while allowing influences from soul, folk, jazz and psychedelic pop to flow through. After time in the group Garotas Suecas and then developing a more personal repertoire, Sessa belongs to an independent scene where the legacy of tropicalismo, samba and MPB mixes with a more pared-down approach. Grandeza, released in 2019, established the foundations of this aesthetic: often slow tempos, a prominent acoustic guitar, Afro‑Brazilian percussion and vocals worked with great attention to detail. On Pequena Vertigem de Amor (2022) Sessa keeps that base but widens his palette toward a more nocturnal MPB, sometimes looser in rhythm, with touches of funk and soul and a significant role for female backing vocals. Between Brazil and the United States, Sessa plays indie and contemporary stages in a register where intimacy and popular tradition converse without hierarchy.
