Modern Nature
Formed in London around Jack Cooper after the end of Ultimate Painting, Modern Nature initially built itself within a minimal rock framework before opening its writing to more acoustic, repetitive and collective forms. On How to Live in the City (2019), Modern Nature blends post-punk, krautrock and psychedelic folk into tense, circular pieces; the band's subsequent trajectory gradually shifts the centre of gravity toward a chamber folk-jazz made of repeated motifs, supple percussion, improvisation and airy arrangements, as shown by Island of Noise (2022) and No Fixed Point in Space (2023). Conceived as much for the studio as for the stage, Modern Nature operates as a variable-geometry group gathered around Jack Cooper, with line-ups that evolve according to recordings and tours. Active in the British independent, experimental and folk scenes, Modern Nature balances spare songs and open pieces where motoric pulse, organic textures and a search for space intersect.
