The Apartments
Formed in Brisbane in the late 1970s, The Apartments was built around singer-songwriter Peter Milton Walsh, who spent a short time with The Go-Betweens before developing his own project. Rooted in an indie-rock vein with touches of chamber pop, The Apartments favor narrative songs carried by a fragile voice and arrangements often enriched with strings and brass. After several singles and EPs, their debut album The Evening Visits… and Stays for Years was released in 1985 on Rough Trade, laying the foundations for a melancholic, urban universe continued by Drift in 1992 and A Life Full of Farewells in 1995. Around Walsh, the lineup of The Apartments has been fluid in studio and onstage, in Australia and in Europe, with a particular foothold in France where the band performs regularly. After a quieter period, The Apartments resumed recording with No Song, No Spell, No Madrigal in 2015 and In and Out of the Light in 2020, continuing an exploration of intimate songs—stories of memory, cities and relationships—shaped within a restrained, finely detailed pop framework.
