Tanya Donelly
Born in Newport, Rhode Island, and long associated with the Boston and New England scene, Tanya Donelly developed in the 1980s a songwriting style that sits between indie rock, alternative rock, and more ethereal melodies. She first came to prominence as a member of Throwing Muses, a band she co-founded with Kristin Hersh, where her guitar work and songs added a more melodic dimension. In the late 1980s Donelly also took part in the early days of The Breeders with Kim Deal, before focusing her efforts by forming Belly in 1991. With that band she released the albums Star (1993) and King (1995), which combine bright guitars, rock tension and pop harmonies. From the mid-1990s Donelly pursued a solo career with a more intimate register, blending alternative rock, folk and acoustic arrangements on Lovesongs for Underdogs (1997), Beautysleep (2002), Whiskey Tango Ghosts (2004) and This Hungry Life (2006). Her trajectory has remained linked to frequent collaborations within the American indie circuit, while periodically returning to her original bands, notably with Belly’s reunion and the album Dove in 2018, and later in the duo The Loyal Seas, formed with Brian Sullivan and documented by Strange Mornings in the Garden in 2022.
