Buffalo Tom
Formed in Boston in the mid-1980s, Buffalo Tom is part of the American alternative rock wave that emerged around college scenes and independent clubs. The trio comprises Bill Janovitz (guitar, vocals), Chris Colbourn (bass, vocals) and Tom Maginnis (drums), and is built on dense guitars, clear melodies and introspective songwriting. From their debut “Buffalo Tom” (1988) and “Birdbrain” (1990), the band refined a blend of indie rock, alternative rock and folk-tinged elements, initially working with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. as a producer. Buffalo Tom reached wider recognition in the early 1990s with “Let Me Come Over” (1992) and “Big Red Letter Day” (1993), often associated with the college rock movement and the rise of independent radio. “Sleepy Eyed” (1995) and “Smitten” (1998) continued this trajectory before a recording hiatus; they returned with “Three Easy Pieces” (2007), “Skins” (2011) and “Quiet and Peace” (2018). Still active on stage, Buffalo Tom alternates tours in North America and Europe, maintaining a guitar-driven identity that is both melodic and taut, powered by the alternating vocals of Janovitz and Colbourn.
