The Wants

Born out of Brooklyn's independent scene, The Wants took shape in New York in 2016 around Madison Velding-VanDam and Jason Gates, later joined by Yasmin Haddad, in a trio configuration that extends the city's post-punk heritage into a tighter, more mechanical terrain. The band articulates an aesthetic at the crossroads of no wave, post-punk and a rhythmic approach shaped by Detroit techno, with dry bass lines, angular guitars, repetitive motifs, and a voice often detached. The Wants began circulating on New York stages before drawing wider notice in 2018 and 2019, a period during which the group recorded and toured, including a SXSW appearance in 2019. Several singles appeared then, including 'Clearly A Crisis' (2019), 'Fear My Society' (2019), followed by 'The Motor' and 'Container' (2020). This first phase culminated in the album Container, released in 2020, which outlines the contours of The Wants' sound: nerve-wracking, cold without being abstract, built on repetition, tension and a very urban reading of experimental rock.
