BCUC
Under the name Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness, BCUC took shape in Soweto in 2003 as a collective built around voices, percussion and an evolving rhythm section. BCUC creates music at the intersection of afro-psychedelia, funk, spoken word, conscious hip-hop and a punk energy, with pieces structured around trance, call-and-response and pulses drawn from South African traditions. The group sings in the country’s eleven official languages, anchoring BCUC directly in social realities, local memories and ritual practices. After an initial phase of emergence on the Johannesburg and Soweto scenes, BCUC broadened its reach during the 2010s to festival stages across Africa and Europe. Their discography includes Our Truth (2016), Emakhosini (2018) and The Healing (2019). Emakhosini was recorded in Lyon — a step that accompanied the project’s international opening without altering its roots. Between collective chants, repetitive grooves and rising intensity, BCUC maintains a frontal, physical approach in which performance remains central to the group's identity.
