Les Amazones d'Afrique
Formed in Bamako in 2015, Les Amazones d’Afrique emerged as a pan-African women's collective with a fluid lineup, united by a musical and political project focused on women's place in society and the fight against gender-based violence. The group first made itself heard with singers such as Mamani Keïta, Kandia Kouyaté, Mariam Doumbia, Rokia Koné, Nneka and Angélique Kidjo, and gave its debut concert at the Fiesta des Suds in Marseille in 2015. The name Les Amazones d’Afrique alludes to the Amazons of Dahomey, while its first released track, "I Play the Kora", invokes the image of an instrument long reserved for men in West Africa. Their music blends Manding heritage, collective singing, contemporary afro-pop and electronic textures, striking a balance between vocal traditions, percussion and more urban arrangements. Signed to the Real World label, the collective released République Amazone in 2017, Amazones Power in 2020 and Musow Danse in 2024. From record to record, Les Amazones d’Afrique evolve their voices, collaborations and sonic colors while maintaining a strong West African anchoring.
