Led by American singer Michelle David, who has long been based in the Netherlands, Michelle David & The True-Tones brings together a core of Dutch musicians from the soul and rhythm-and-blues scene. The group continues the trajectory of Michelle David & The Gospel Sessions, which initially highlighted a blend of gospel, soul and blues before broadening its scope to more open forms of African-American music. With Michelle David & The True-Tones the gospel foundation remains central but is shaded with funk, northern soul, pop touches and rhythms reminiscent of 1960s and 1970s rhythm and blues, presented in a live-oriented format. Michelle David’s voice is supported by a tight rhythm section and restrained guitar and keyboard arrangements that favor effectiveness over showy embellishment. On stage, Michelle David & The True-Tones favor clubs and European festivals, where the band develops a repertoire of original compositions and a few reworked covers in this energetic soul-gospel spirit. This lineup allows Michelle David to continue, under a new name, a path begun in choirs and gospel ensembles while asserting a group identity centered on interaction and collective playing.
