Coroner

Formed in Zurich in 1985, Coroner initially emerged within the Swiss metal scene, notably after being associated with Celtic Frost as part of their road crew, before developing a distinct identity at the intersection of thrash metal, progressive metal and tightly structured songwriting. The trio comprised Ron Broder on vocals and bass, Tommy Vetterli on guitar and Marky Edelmann on drums. From R.I.P. (1987) and Punishment for Decadence (1988) onward, Coroner established a precise, fast and dense approach, enriched by references to classical music, jazz and complex rhythmic constructions. No More Color (1989) and Mental Vortex (1991) emphasized this technical direction while retaining a clear thrash foundation, whereas Grin (1993) introduced colder, more mechanical textures approaching industrial and groove metal. The band split in 1996 but reformed in the early 2010s to return to the stage, with Diego Rapacchietti on drums for several reunion shows. In the history of European metal, Coroner remains associated with a form of analytical, taut and highly crafted thrash often linked to technical and progressive scenes.
