Ari Lennox

Born in 1991 in Washington, D.C., Ari Lennox, whose real name is Courtney Shanade Salter, has developed an R&B and neo-soul repertoire shaped by 1990s influences and a strongly narrative songwriting approach. After several self-released projects in the early 2010s, she joined J. Cole’s Dreamville label in 2015, becoming its first female artist — a move that structured the next phase of her career between studio recordings and contributions to the collective’s compilations. The EP Pho (2016) established Ari Lennox on the American R&B scene, and the album Shea Butter Baby (2019) confirmed her rise, driven in part by the title track that first appeared on the Creed II soundtrack as a duet with J. Cole. In 2022, the album age/sex/location extended this aesthetic with supple, voice-centered productions and an intimate narrative focused on romantic relationships, sexuality and everyday life. Collaborations with artists such as Jazmine Sullivan and Summer Walker place Ari Lennox within a generation of R&B singers who blend classic soul, candid humor and a direct perspective on contemporary emotional experiences.
