Stéphane Kerecki

Born in Paris in 1970, Stéphane Kerecki has established himself on the French jazz scene first as a double bassist and later as the leader of several ensembles where composition plays a central role. Trained at the conservatory and then at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris under Jean-François Jenny-Clark, Riccardo Del Fra and Jean-Paul Céléa, he develops a playing anchored in the tradition of modern jazz, attentive to tone, space and collective dialogue. After beginnings alongside Steve Potts, Kerecki has accompanied numerous musicians, including Daniel Humair, Michel Portal, Yaron Herman, Denis Colin or Thomas Savy, and also participates in the Paris Jazz Big Band. In a trio since the 2000s, he asserts a contemporary jazz aesthetic open to flows between lyricism, improvisation and highly written structures, notably on Story Tellers (2004), Focus Danse (2007) and Houria (2009). His career extends into varied formats, from the Patience duo with John Taylor in 2011 to the Nouvelle Vague quartet in 2014, then French Touch in 2018, Out of the Silence in 2022 and A Modern Songbook with Thomas Enhco in 2023. Stéphane Kerecki thus moves between clubs, festivals and creative projects, in a register where the double bass organizes as much the pulsation as the overall color.
