Géraldine Laurent
Born in Niort, Géraldine Laurent emerged on the French jazz scene in the early 2000s with a language centered on the alto saxophone, at the intersection of bebop, post‑bop and a highly mobile contemporary jazz. She initially worked in compact formats where the interplay between musicians is paramount, notably in the Time Out Trio with bassist Yoni Zelnik and drummer Donald Kontomanou. Across projects under her own name and numerous collaborations, she has developed this foundation toward more open ensembles while maintaining a clear focus on melodic line, rhythmic propulsion and collective improvisation. Her playing is marked by an incisive alto sound, a nervous yet unburdened phrasing, and a way of making the tradition of modern jazz converse with restrained writing. Géraldine Laurent performs both in clubs and on festival stages throughout France and Europe, in a register where discursive precision remains tied to great freedom of movement between themes and choruses.
