Jan Lundgren

Born in Olofström, in Blekinge, and raised in Ronneby, Sweden, Jan Lundgren has established himself since the early 1990s as a jazz pianist and composer rooted in the Swedish tradition while developing a largely international career. Trained at the Malmö Academy of Music, where he later taught, Lundgren first played as an accompanist for musicians such as Arne Domnérus, Putte Wickman, or Rune Gustafsson, before asserting a more personal voice. His playing sits between mainstream jazz, Nordic lyricism, standards repertoire, and melodically inspired writing drawn from Nordic music. Under his name, notably Conclusion (1994) followed by Swedish Standards (1997), a record that strongly marks his career. In trio, in solo, or in chamber settings, Lundgren favors formats where listening and harmonic clarity occupy a central place. His career later expands with projects such as Mare Nostrum alongside Paolo Fresu and Richard Galliano, launched in 2007 and subsequently continued with Mare Nostrum II in 2016 and Mare Nostrum III in 2019, as well as Potsdamer Platz in 2017, Kristallen with Nils Landgren in 2020, and Into the Night with Lars Danielsson and Émile Parisien in 2021. Based in Ystad, Lundgren is also active in the Nordic jazz scene as artistic director of festivals and of the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen.
