Under the name ratbag, Sophie Brown has been developing a musical and visual project from Auckland, New Zealand, since 2021, situated at the crossroads of alternative rock, art pop, shoegaze, grunge and punk. ratbag writes songs where pop melodies coexist with hazy guitars, abrasive textures and a pronounced taste for shifts in tone, while the visual world extends this aesthetic through drawings, animations and monstrous characters inspired by horror and surrealism. Before her first releases, ratbag gained attention online with videos and creations posted on TikTok, where she stages a fictional band of creatures that accompanies her artistic identity. After the single “rats in my walls” in 2023, followed by “exit girl”, ratbag gathered her early tracks on the EP why aren’t you laughing? released in 2023. She continued to develop her work with the singles “Pinky Boy” and “Pinky Girl” in 2024, and the EP Kissing Under an (almost) Full Moon in 2025. Through ratbag, Sophie Brown brings together pop songwriting, rock energy and graphic imagination in a coherent multimedia project in which music and image advance on equal terms.
