And One

Formed in Berlin in 1989 around Steve Naghavi and Chris Ruiz, And One initially followed on from European EBM and German synthpop, with a sound combining dry rhythms, new wave melodies and choruses sung in both German and English. Later established as a long-term project led by Steve Naghavi, And One went through several lineup changes — including Joke Jay, Rick Schah, Gio van Oli, Chris Ruiz and later Nico Wieditz — while maintaining an identity tied to dark electro, synthpop and futurepop scenes. After an initial run of records in the 1990s, from Anguish (1991) to I.S.T. (1994), the band broadened its palette with Nordhausen (1997), 9.9.99 9 Uhr (1998), Virgin Superstar (2000) and Aggressor (2003). The group then returned with Bodypop (2006), Tanzomat (2011), S.T.O.P. (2012) and the 2014 sequence Magnet, Propeller and Achtung 80. And One remains associated with structured club electronics — cold in texture but more melodic than classic EBM — and Steve Naghavi shows a marked taste for pop formats and the codes of the European synth scene.
