Erik Truffaz
Franco‑Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz, born in 1960 in Chêne‑Bougeries near Geneva, has developed a jazz approach where improvisation sits alongside influences from pop, hip‑hop and electronic music. Trained notably at the Conservatoire de Genève, he came to attention on the European scene in the early 1990s with a quartet that became his preferred format, shaping a sound centered on trumpet, keyboards and a groove‑driven rhythm section. From the late 1990s his Blue Note albums — including Out of a Dream (1997), The Dawn (1998) and Bending New Corners (1999) — established a language combining atmospheric moods, drum‑and‑bass‑inflected rhythms, pared‑down melodic lines and vocal interventions. Later records such as Mantis (2001), The Walk of the Giant Turtle (2003), Saloua (2005) and Arkhangelsk (2007) extended this fusion of jazz, spoken word and electronic textures, while In Between (2010), El Tiempo de la Revolución (2012), Doni Doni (2016) and Lune Rouge (2019) attest to a sustained interest in intersections with song and Afro‑Caribbean musics. Alternating quartet projects, collaborations with singers and forays into more cinematic forms, he has established himself within a European scene attentive to hybridizations between jazz and amplified cultures.
