Info
On 16 May 2026 at the Élysée Montmartre in Paris, Big Youth and The Abyssinians share the bill for an evening dedicated to Jamaican roots music.
Big Youth, born Manley Augustus Buchanan, emerged in the early 1970s as a prominent deejay on Kingston’s sound systems. His half-sung toasting, steeped in Rasta slogans and social commentary, sits on roots riddims that defined the period. Tracks like “S-90 Skank” and the album Screaming Target laid the foundations of a style that has since permeated reggae and dub. Still active on stage, he has moved through the decades with a spoken delivery, sung outbursts and a taste for improvisation.
The trio The Abyssinians shaped, in the late 1960s, an ensemble singing style with tight harmonies rooted in Rastafari inspiration. Satta Massagana, partly sung in Amharic, became a landmark of the genre, followed by albums such as Forward On To Zion, which establish a meditative tempo, deep bass and a spiritual imagery. In concert, their repertoire brings together conscious songs and slow grooves, carried by a vocal identity that has endured across generations.
