On March 4, 2027, Sona Jobarteh brings her kora to the Centre Culturel de Vichy for a concert that speaks as much of a lineage as of a departure. Born into a prominent Manding griot family, she blazed a trail by taking up an instrument long reserved for men. Trained in London, she forges a dialogue between West African tradition and a more Western musical language, with this very personal blend of blues, acoustic folk and hints of Afro-pop.
On stage, the 21-string kora takes center stage, but everything hinges on the nuances: patterns that swirl like mantras, crisp melodies, singing in Mandinka and English, choirs and discreet arrangements that broaden the sound without smoothing it out. Around her, a vibrant ensemble, where the transmission continues throughout the group, notably with her son on balafon. An evening to hear how ancient music remains in motion.
