Dhafer Youssef

Born in 1967 in Téboulba, Tunisia, singer and oud player Dhafer Youssef developed an early, close relationship with the voice and his country’s traditional music before turning to jazz and improvisation. Settling in Vienna in the early 1990s, he became part of the European experimental scene, collaborating with jazz musicians, contemporary music players and artists from diverse cultures, which fostered an aesthetic where Arabic modes meet jazz harmony and subtle electronic textures. His first album as a leader, Malak (1999), established the foundations of this approach, continued by Electric Sufi (2001) and Digital Prophecy (2003), and further refined on Divine Shadows (2006), which highlights his work on spirituality and timbre. With Abu Nawas Rhapsody (2010), Birds Requiem (2013) and Diwan of Beauty and Odd (2016), Youssef deepened the interplay of crafted composition, improvisation and rhythmic exploration, surrounded by musicians from the European, Middle Eastern and Indian jazz scenes. Sounds of Mirrors (2018) and Street of Minarets (2023) confirm this cosmopolitan trajectory, spanning solo concerts, quartet projects and occasional collaborations for film and visual arts.
