He comes from the Fateh Ali Khan line of qawwals and grew up steeped in Sufi repertoire, with a way of singing shaped by Hindustani classical training: long phrases, quick turns, and improvisations that stretch a melody until it feels like it’s breathing.
Over the years he’s opened his sound beyond the traditional form, moving between spiritual songs and the more direct formats of South Asian popular music, including the film repertoire that made his voice widely familiar in the 2000s.
