On April 26, 2026 at the Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto, BEATrio gathers Béla Fleck, Edmar Castañeda and Antonio Sánchez for a stripped-back meeting of strings and rhythm. Fleck pushes the banjo past bluegrass habits, flipping from tight rolls to singing lines and angled harmonies; his phrasing sets the melodic thread and opens real room for improvisation. Castañeda brings the harp into fresh territory, splitting bass, chords and melody across both hands to build taut grooves and nimble counterpoint; his percussive touch locks with Fleck while carving out space. Sánchez shapes the flow with crisp cymbal color, elastic time and layered patterns, steering transitions, firming the pocket or loosening it for open dialogue as needed.
Together they fold folk inflections, jazz language and Latin pulses into themes that bend and return in new light. Unison figures snap into call-and-response, meters shift without showiness, and the trio narrows to duos or solo spots before reuniting with a clear, acoustic punch. BEATrio is less about genre tags than about conversation: three distinct voices, one shared pulse, and a set that moves with clarity and a quietly charged energy.
