Antonio Sánchez
Born in Mexico City in 1971, Antonio Sánchez first trained in classical piano at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música before continuing his studies in Boston, where he gravitated toward modern jazz and improvisation. As a drummer and composer, he developed a highly articulated, rhythmically dense yet melodically attentive approach, situated between post‑bop, contemporary jazz and Latin American influences. He came to notice in the late 1990s after working with Paquito D’Rivera and Danilo Pérez, and subsequently became a long‑standing member of Pat Metheny's circle, recording notably Speaking of Now (2002), The Way Up (2005), Day Trip (2008), Unity Band (2012) and From This Place (2020). At the same time he led his own projects under the name Migration, releasing Migration (2007), Live in New York at Jazz Standard (2010), New Life (2013), and then Three Times Three and The Meridian Suite in 2015. His film work, notably the score for Birdman (2014), broadened his activities, followed by albums exploring other formats and textures such as Bad Hombre (2017), Lines in the Sand (2019) and SHIFT (Bad Hombre Vol. II) (2022). Based in New York, Antonio Sánchez has for several years divided his time between performance, composition and teaching.
