Buntspecht

Formed in Vienna in 2016, Buntspecht brings together six musicians around a songwriting approach that blends indie pop, folk, bossa nova, gypsy jazz and elements of Wienerlied in writing that is often acoustic, carried by the voice, strings, brass and woodwinds. The group forms around Lukas Klein, Jakob Lang and Florentin Scheicher, initially joined by Lukas Chytka, then by Antonia Luksch on cello, with Roman Geßler and Florian Röthel completing the ensemble. Buntspecht records its first songs in an improvised studio before the release of Großteils Kleinigkeiten in 2018, a starting point for rapid circulation on Austrian stages and later German ones. The following years show a steady evolution of its format, balancing group intensity, more constructed arrangements and production increasingly kept in-house: Draußen im Kopf appears in 2019, followed in the same year by Wer jagt mich wenn ich hungrig bin, presented by the group as a short format. In 2021, Buntspecht releases the EP Paradies and then the album Spring bevor du fällst, whose lyrics notably echo the isolation of the pandemic years. The group then continues with An das Gestern, das nie Morgen wurden durfte. Ich warte in 2023 and Konstrukt 5 in 2025, confirming a style where chamber song, indie energy and a form of collective theatricality remain closely linked.
