Bojan Z
Born in Belgrade in 1968, Bojan Zulfikarpašić, who performs under the name Bojan Z, settled in Paris in 1988 after beginning his musical training at a very young age. His formation was shaped by Yugoslav folk music, the classical repertoire and a period in New York with Clare Fischer. On the Paris jazz scene he quickly established himself in the 1990s alongside Michel Portal, Henri Texier, Tony Rabeson, Noël Akchoté and Julien Lourau, with whom he founded Trash Corporation, winner of the La Défense competition in 1992. His piano approach blends contemporary jazz, a strong rhythmic grounding, very free improvisation and Balkan echoes, with a marked taste for metric displacements and colors drawn from Mediterranean music. His discography under his own name includes Koreni (1998), Transpacifik (2003), Xenophonia (2006), Humus (2009), Soul Shelter (2012) and As Is (2023). In solo, duo and small-ensemble formats Bojan Z has also developed long-term projects with Julien Lourau, Nils Wogram and Michel Portal, and is firmly established on the French and European jazz scenes.
