Machine Girl

An electronic project originating from Long Island, New York State, Machine Girl emerged in 2012 around producer Matt Stephenson—initially a solo endeavor before becoming a stage duo with drummer Sean Kelly. Positioned at the crossroads of breakcore, digital hardcore, jungle, footwork, noise, and a punk aesthetic, Machine Girl crafts a highly rhythmic, saturated, and fragmented sound that draws as much from club culture as from hardcore codes and DIY scenes. The project gained notice in the American experimental sphere with the album “WLFGRL” in 2014, followed by “...Because I’m Young Arrogant and Hate Everything You Stand For” in 2017 and “The Ugly Art” in 2018, where denser structures and a quasi‑rock energy came into focus. Embedded in a network of small venues, squats, and specialized festivals, Machine Girl ramped up touring from the latter half of the 2010s, centering a live setup heavily anchored in drums and physical performance. In 2020, the album “U‑Void Synthesizer” pushed the writing further toward a frenetic collage of bass music, industrial influences, and accents of video game music—an orientation extended with the original soundtracks for the game “Neon White” in 2022, bringing Machine Girl into a new context while carrying forward the same abrasive sonic vocabulary.
