Angel Bat Dawid

Clarinetist, composer, vocalist and ensemble leader based in Chicago, Angel Bat Dawid develops music that connects spiritual jazz, free jazz, gospel, blues and spoken word. Born in the United States and having spent part of her childhood in Kenya before returning to the Midwest, she is rooted in the history of African‑American musics while working with Chicago’s experimental scene, linked to the legacy of the AACM and the International Anthem label. Noticed with the album The Oracle in 2019—entirely assembled from live recordings—she continued her output with the EP Transition East (2020), the LIVE album with her group Tha Brothahood (2020), and Hush Harbor Mixtape Vol. 1: Doxology (2021), which blends sound collages, sung prayers and spoken interventions. With Requiem for Jazz (2023), Angel Bat Dawid more directly explores the connections between improvisation, political memory and collective rituals. Active on club and festival stages in the United States and Europe, she also appears as an instrumentalist, arranger or guest vocalist with various formations of Chicago’s new jazz avant‑garde.
