Alice Diop & Angel Bat Dawid

Info

On April 12, 2026, at La Dynamo de Banlieues Bleues in Pantin, Alice Diop brings together Chicago musician Angel Bat Dawid for The Voyage of the Black Venus, a musical variation. A France–United States creation, this meeting traces a path between narrative, memory and improvisation, where spoken voice sits alongside singing, pulse and breath.

A clarinetist, composer, vocalist and ensemble leader, Angel Bat Dawid connects spiritual jazz, free jazz, gospel, blues and spoken word. Rooted in the history of African‑American musics, she frequents Chicago’s experimental scene, echoing the AACM and the International Anthem label. Her record The Oracle, crafted in 2019 from live recordings, opened a route that she continued with Transition East and the live collaboration with Tha Brothahood in 2020, then Hush Harbor Mixtape Vol. 1: Doxology in 2021, blending sound collages, sung prayers and spoken interventions. With Requiem for Jazz in 2023, she deepened the connections between improvisation, political memory and collective rituals.

Here, her music carries The Voyage of the Black Venus toward a form in motion—between choir, spoken word and clarinet—in dialogue with the material mobilized by Alice Diop. A creation that circulates between France and the United States.
