Sun Ra & His Arkestra

Formed in Chicago in the mid-1950s by pianist and composer Herman “Sun Ra” Blount, Sun Ra & His Arkestra developed a large jazz ensemble that moved between big band, hard bop, and avant-garde experimentation. Initially anchored in orchestral writing steeped in swing, the group gradually shifted toward free jazz, collective textures, and an Afrofuturist aesthetic in which personal mythology, science fiction, and Egyptian references shaped the universe of Sun Ra & His Arkestra. Later based in New York and then Philadelphia, the ensemble recorded an extensive discography, with milestones such as Jazz in Silhouette (1959), The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Volume One (1965), The Magic City (1966), Atlantis (1969), and Space Is the Place (1973), marking a move from the big band format to more abstract, open forms. On stage, Sun Ra & His Arkestra combined written arrangements, collective improvisations, vocals, percussion, and costumed staging, creating a sound and visual world centered on cosmic travel and Black cultural emancipation. Over the years, the group gathered a core of loyal musicians, including saxophonist John Gilmore and, later, Marshall Allen. After Sun Ra’s passing in 1993, Marshall Allen took over leadership of the Sun Ra Arkestra, carrying the repertoire’s legacy forward while producing new works and keeping the ensemble active on international stages for jazz and experimental music.
