Nate Smith

Born in 1974 in Chesapeake, Virginia (United States), Nate Smith has built a career as a drummer, composer and bandleader at the intersection of contemporary jazz, funk and African‑American musical traditions. Settling in New York in the late 1990s, he quickly became part of the city’s jazz scene, first distinguishing himself alongside Dave Holland and later collaborating with artists such as Chris Potter, Ravi Coltrane, José James and Lionel Loueke. His playing emphasizes precise grooves, a rhythmic vocabulary informed by R&B and hip‑hop, and a melodic approach to the drums applied to both acoustic swing and electric settings. Under his own name he released the album Workday, Waterbaby Music, Vol. 1 in 2010 and Kinfolk: Postcards from Everywhere in 2017, establishing a project that blends jazz, soul and songwriting around a core group of recurring partners. Kinfolk 2: See the Birds appeared in 2021 and extended this approach by combining original compositions, groove textures and improvisational space. In parallel, he issued Pocket Change in 2018, a collection of short pieces focused on drums and groove. Active as a sideman, Nate Smith also drums in the funk quartet The Fearless Flyers, associated with the Vulfpeck collective, and continues to alternate touring, studio recording and rhythmic research within the international jazz scene.
