Mariel Buckley
Active on the Canadian alt-country scene, Mariel Buckley is steadily establishing herself as a songwriter who blends country heritage with folk and indie rock. Emerging from the Calgary, Alberta scene, she began attracting attention in the mid-2010s with songs rooted in intimate storytelling and North American landscapes, before releasing the 2018 album Driving In The Dark, which asserted a darker, more cinematic aesthetic. With 2022’s Everywhere I Used To Be, Buckley deepens this blend of Americana, alternative country, and folk rock, favoring slow and mid-tempo pacing, often overdriven guitars, and a deep voice carrying lyrics focused on the road, family ties, doubt, and identities at odds with the norm. On stage, she performs solo or with an electric band, moving between clubs, small venues, and folk and roots festivals in Canada and beyond, positioning herself within a network of independent artists who are refreshing the codes of contemporary country without breaking with its classic forms.
