Formed in New Jersey in the early 2010s, Cognitive evolves in technical death metal with brutal accents, nourished by tight rhythms, dense riffs, and a writing style that blends instrumental precision with constant tension. The band first drew attention with the EP 'The Horrid Swarm', released in 2012, before following up with the albums Deformity (2014), Souvenance (2017), Matricide (2021), Malevolent Thoughts of a Hastened Extinction (2021) and Abhorrence (2024). Through these releases, Cognitive hones a formula centered on an aggressive yet legible style, at the crossroads of modern technical death metal and brutal death, without neglecting a direct approach to composition. The lineup has undergone several changes, while maintaining a strong spine in the American extreme metal scene and regular onstage activity. Cognitive has also shared the bill with various names in the death metal circuit and has built a career marked by tours and the progressive evolution of its sound, becoming tighter and darker over the years.
