Bridging Ethiopian cultural roots and the Canadian urban environment, Chxrry22 develops a contemporary R&B that blends spare melodies, atmospheric layers, and touches of pop and alternative. Based in Toronto, she aligns with the North American R&B tradition while favoring slow tempos, hushed harmonies, and songwriting focused on intimate relationships, vulnerability and desire. Signing with XO Records in partnership with Republic Records marked a turning point in 2022 with the release of her debut EP The Other Side, which laid the groundwork for an aesthetic oscillating between introspective ballads and more rhythmic tracks. In 2023 Chxrry22 continued in this vein with Siren, a second EP that sharpens her use of subtle electronic textures and trap-influenced percussion while keeping the voice front and center. While remaining within the R&B format, she experiments with relatively short song structures, a pronounced emphasis on backing vocals, and a vocal register that shifts between spoken passages, soft singing and more powerful lines, positioning her at the intersection of alternative R&B and accessible urban pop rooted in Toronto’s current scene.
