Driven by melodic R&B with pop accents, thuy is part of the new generation of Vietnamese American artists from California, shaped by Bay Area culture and strongly influenced by the R&B aesthetic of the 1990s and 2000s. After starting out in healthcare, thuy gradually turned to songwriting and recording, releasing her first tracks online before building her project around a soft vocal identity, intimate storytelling, and themes of love, vulnerability and self-assertion. The EP I hope u see this (2021) established thuy in a stripped-back contemporary R&B register; the longer project girls like me don’t cry (2022) broadened that foundation toward a pop-adjacent format while remaining focused on simple, direct melodies. Alternating between club tours, festivals and a strong digital presence, thuy has developed a world where diasporic culture, mainstream pop references and introspective R&B coexist within an openly accessible framework.
