John Morales
Born in 1954 in the Bronx, New York, John Morales developed his career within the milieu of New York disco clubs as a DJ, producer, editor and remixer. With Sergio Munzibai he formed the duo Morales and Munzibai, or M and M, active during the transition from disco to post-disco and the early forms of house. Their work focused on extended versions for the dancefloor, rhythmic editing and the use of Latin percussion. John Morales is one of the craftsmen who helped shape club editing and remixing before those formats were fully codified. Throughout the 1980s he wrote or co-wrote numerous versions for artists such as Jocelyn Brown, Thelma Houston, Melba Moore, Evelyn King, Shakatak and Lime; his 1985 remix of “Angel Eyes” is a salient example of that period. After Sergio Munzibai’s death in 1991, John Morales stepped away from the music business for a time, then resumed his activities in the 2000s. His career remains tied to an aesthetic where disco, soul, boogie and house intersect.
