Yuri Honing
Born in Amsterdam in 1965, Yuri Honing has, since the early 1990s, developed a career that sits between acoustic jazz, contemporary composition and openness to other forms. A tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer, Honing first attracted attention with his trio featuring Tony Overwater and Joost Lijbaart, documented on A Matter of Conviction (1992), Star Tracks (1996) and Sequel (1999). His work subsequently intersected with musicians from different scenes, notably Misha Mengelberg, then Paul Bley, Gary Peacock and Paul Motian on Seven (2001), an album that marked a turning point in his international visibility. Over the 2000s, Yuri Honing broadened his palette with Orient Express (2002), Symphonic (2006) with Vince Mendoza and the Metropole Orkest, and later Wired Paradise, a project where his playing fits a more electric setting with a tension close to rock and fusion, as on Temptation (2006) and White Tiger (2010). From 2012 onward Honing returned to a tighter format with the Acoustic Quartet, heard on True (2012), Desire (2015) and Bluebeard (2020), where the saxophone’s lyricism, the piano’s spaces and a supple rhythm section shape a narrative, melodic and carefully constructed jazz.
