Rymden

Formed in Scandinavia around the Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, the Swedish bassist Dan Berglund and the Swedish drummer Magnus Öström, Rymden brings together three musicians already linked to important trajectories of Nordic jazz, Berglund and Öström having previously played together in e.s.t., while Wesseltoft had notably developed the Trialogue project with Berglund. The trio took shape in 2017 and sits in a register that crosses contemporary jazz, fusion, melodic lyricism, rock-infused impulses and textures borrowing as much from classical music as from certain colors of Scandinavian folk. In Rymden, the collective playing rests on a balance between writing and a very free circulation of energy, with a piano often driving, an electric bass playing a marked harmonic role, and a drum set alternating tension, precision and more open bursts. After a first concert at Nattjazz in Bergen, Rymden released Reflections & Odysseys in 2019, followed by Space Sailors in 2020 on Jazzland Recordings. In 2023, Rymden + Kork appeared, recorded with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, followed by Valleys & Mountains. Present on European jazz stages since its beginnings, Rymden develops an instrumental repertoire where storytelling, dynamic contrasts and Scandinavian grounding remain central.
