Andy Sheppard

Born in Warminster, Wiltshire, in 1957, Andy Sheppard established himself in British jazz from the late 1970s, initially with the quartet Sphere, and then by developing a career between the United Kingdom and France, where he notably plays with Urban Sax. A tenor and soprano saxophonist, Sheppard works a flexible, melodic language situated between contemporary jazz, orchestral writing, and improvisation, with constant attention to space, timbre, and group dynamics. His first leader album, Andy Sheppard, appeared in 1987, followed, among others, by Introductions in the Dark (1989), Soft on the Inside (1990), Rhythm Method (1993), and Delivery Suite (1994). Over the years, Sheppard alternates big-band formats, trio projects, and enduring collaborations, notably with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, in a repertoire where writing remains central without limiting playing freedom. His career also leads him to work with George Russell, Gil Evans, Keith Tippett, Nana Vasconcelos, or John Martyn. From the late 2000s, his ECM discography marks a move toward a more pared-down approach with Movements in Colour (2009), Trio Libero (2012), Surrounded by Sea (2015), and Romaria (2018), albums that extend this search for lyric, airy, and mobile jazz.
