Yellowjackets

Formed in Los Angeles in the late 1970s around keyboardist Russell Ferrante, Yellowjackets began as the backing band for guitarist Robben Ford before quickly establishing themselves as an independent jazz‑fusion group. The Yellowjackets quartet, shaped over time around Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip (and his successors), drummer Will Kennedy and saxophonist Bob Mintzer, is part of an American scene where electric jazz, funk and R&B influences converge. From their eponymous 1981 album the group established an aesthetic combining structured grooves, clear melodies and pronounced harmonic work, continued on records such as Greenhouse (1991) and Timeline (2011). Over the decades Yellowjackets have alternated studio recordings and live albums, developing a compositional approach that gradually brought fusion closer to an acoustic contemporary jazz quartet while retaining a rhythmic dimension rooted in rock and African‑American music. Occasional collaborations with guest guitarists or singers have broadened the band’s palette without changing its instrumental core. Present on many international club and festival stages, Yellowjackets maintained a steady recording output up to Parallel Motion (2022), underscoring the continuity of collective work around composition and improvisation within the quartet.
