Dave Weckl

Born in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1960, Dave Weckl emerged in the early 1980s on New York’s jazz‑fusion scene with a precise, highly articulated style at the crossroads of modern jazz, funk and post‑bop. Trained in part at the University of Bridgeport, Weckl began his career doing studio work and touring with artists such as Paul Simon, George Benson, Michel Camilo, Robert Plant and Anthony Jackson, before joining the Chick Corea Elektric Band from 1985 to 1991 — a pivotal period in his career — and later appearing with Chick Corea’s Akoustic Band. At the same time he developed a solo career with Master Plan (1990), Heads Up (1992) and Hard Wired (1994), then led the more collective Dave Weckl Band, taking fusion further with tight arrangements and funk inflections on Rhythm of the Soul (1998), Synergy (1999), Transition (2000), The Zone (2001), Perpetual Motion (2002) and Multiplicity (2005). He has also recorded and toured with Mike Stern while pursuing more acoustic projects such as Convergence with Jay Oliver (2014) and Of the Same Mind with the Dave Weckl Acoustic Band (2015).
