Marcus Miller
Born in 1959 in Brooklyn, New York, Marcus Miller established himself by the late 1970s on the New York studio musician scene, working between soul, funk, jazz and R&B. An electric bassist, composer and producer, he first drew attention in television bands and for his arranging work for Luther Vandross in the early 1980s, before becoming a key collaborator with Miles Davis on the albums 'Tutu' (1986), 'Music from Siesta' (1987) and 'Amandla' (1989), where his compositions and bass lines play a structural role. At the same time he accompanied or produced recordings for artists from jazz, pop-rock and gospel, while developing a career under his own name with 'Suddenly' (1983), 'The Sun Don't Lie' (1993), 'Tales' (1995), 'M2' (2001), 'Silver Rain' (2005), 'Renaissance' (2012), 'Afrodeezia' (2015) and 'Laid Black' (2018). His aesthetic combines pronounced funk grooves, harmonies inherited from modern jazz and accessible melodies, often in formats close to jazz-fusion and urban music. Present on major international stages with various groups, from an expanded quartet to large ensembles, he alternates tours, collaborations and commissioned projects, notably for film and television.
