Yes
Formed in London in 1968 around singer Jon Anderson and bassist Chris Squire, Yes belongs to the wave of British progressive rock that was developing at the time across London clubs and major European venues. The band quickly developed a language blending psychedelic rock, classical influences and jazz touches, featuring long pieces, multi-part structures, distinctive vocal harmonies and extended instrumental passages. After two initial albums, their direction crystallized with The Yes Album (1971), Fragile (1971) and Close to the Edge (1972), where the arrival of guitarist Steve Howe and then keyboardist Rick Wakeman established an aesthetic close to symphonic rock. Through numerous lineup changes, Yes moved in the 1980s toward more concise formats and a more mainstream rock sound with 90125 (1983), associated with guitarist Trevor Rabin and producer Trevor Horn. In the following decades the band alternated periods of relative activity with returns to a more expansive progressive approach, as heard on Talk (1994), The Ladder (1999) or Magnification (2001). After Chris Squire's death in 2015, bass duties have been handled by Billy Sherwood, while lead vocals have been provided by Jon Davison since 2012. Yes continues to perform internationally and to release new studio recordings, including The Quest (2021) and Mirror to the Sky (2023), extending an approach that combines progressive rock, art rock and melodic elements drawn from its various eras.
