We Are Scientists
Born in Berkeley, California in 1999 before settling in New York, We Are Scientists was built around Keith Murray and Chris Cain, initially as a trio with drummer Michael Tapper and, from the 2010s, as a stable core augmented in studio and on stage by Keith Carne. The band develops a nervous indie rock situated between alternative rock and the post‑punk revival, featuring short songs, dry, taut guitars, prominent bass lines and a direct melodic sense. After several EPs in the early 2000s, We Are Scientists rose to prominence with With Love and Squalor (2005), then continued with Brain Thrust Mastery (2008) and Barbara (2010), recorded during a period when Andy Burrows was on drums. Rooted in the New York rock scene while maintaining a strong connection to British audiences and the festival circuit, they steered their songwriting toward more pop-oriented formats without abandoning a concise rock foundation, as on TV en Français (2014), Helter Seltzer (2016), Megaplex (2018), Huffy (2021), Lobes (2023) and Qualifying Miles (2025). Over time, We Are Scientists have preserved an identity made up of post‑punk tension, power‑pop efficiency and a marked taste for immediate choruses.
