Bernard Lavilliers
Born in Saint‑Étienne in 1946, Bernard Lavilliers established himself during the 1970s on the French music scene by blending chanson, rock and Latin American influences. A former worker turned long‑distance traveler, he quickly infused his lyrics with portside tales, themes of wandering and social realities, showing a particular taste for urban and maritime atmospheres. Splitting his time between Paris and lengthy stays abroad, he developed a repertoire where French song mixes with reggae, Brazilian rhythms, Caribbean sonorities and touches of jazz, often arranged orchestrally and open to world music. From the late 1970s, albums such as "O gringo" (1980) and "État d'urgence" (1983) firmly established him on concert‑hall and festival stages in France and the Francophone world. The 1990s and 2000s extended this path through steady studio work — notably "Carnets de bord" (2004) — and sustained live activity. He continued recording through to "Clair‑obscur" (2021), maintaining a balance between narrative song, rhythmic explorations and occasional collaborations with musicians from diverse backgrounds.
