The Space Lady
Behind The Space Lady is Susan Dietrich, born in 1948 in Pueblo, Colorado, an American musician who passed through Boston and then the San Francisco Bay Area, where she spent many years busking between the 1970s and the 1990s. Initially playing accordion and later a portable synthesizer, The Space Lady built a distinctive universe mixing space music, lo‑fi synth‑pop, psychedelic pop and an outsider aesthetic, driven by a clear voice and reworked covers of pop and rock classics as well as a few original songs. Her stage image — a silver winged helmet — became a familiar sight in the public spaces of Berkeley and San Francisco, and her stage name established itself. After withdrawing from music in 2000 and returning to Colorado, The Space Lady resumed performing in 2012 with the help of Eric Schneider, her partner and later husband, who accompanied her into this second phase of her career, now more focused on venues and international tours. Her discography released under this name includes The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits (2013), The Space Lady (2015) and The Space Lady’s Back! (2016). Since her return she has continued to sustain a minimalist, dreamlike and slightly offbeat repertoire at the intersection of cover, performance and homemade electronic pop.
