Tamikrest
Formed in 2006 in Kidal, northern Mali, Tamikrest brings together Tuareg musicians around singer-guitarist Ousmane Ag Mossa and bassist Cheick Ag Tiglia. The group belongs to the desert blues current, blending electric guitars, repetitive bass lines and percussion inspired by traditional rhythms, with lyrics mainly in Tamasheq addressing exile, movement across Sahelian borders and transformations of nomadic life. From their debut album Adagh (2010), and later Toumastin (2011) and Chatma (2013), Tamikrest refined a songwriting approach in which rock and blues structures converse with ishumar melodies and certain psychedelic inflections. The live release Taksera – Live in Tamanrasset (2015), followed by Kidal (2017) and Tamotaït (2020), extends this exploration by playing on contrasts between slow pulses and more driving tracks. Often produced by Chris Eckman, Tamikrest develops both in the studio and on stage a tight aesthetic centered on guitars, rough-edged backing vocals and rhythmic ostinatos. Based at times between Mali, Algeria and other countries in the region, Tamikrest forms part of a network of Sahelian and European scenes, intersecting Tuareg culture, popular Saharan music and references to global rock.
