Tama Sumo
Based in Berlin since 1990, Tama Sumo, born Kerstin Egert in Bavaria, trained in the early 1990s Berlin nightlife scene after an initial discovery of acid house in Nuremberg. She began DJing in 1993 at Drama, a queer bar where her approach took shape around a vocal house inherited from New York, before becoming a regular presence at Café Moskau and then Tresor, where she was a resident for nearly ten years. From 2001, Tama Sumo joined the Ostgut parties and established herself durably in the Panorama Bar and Berghain ecosystem, where her name remains associated with long, crafted and open sets. Her musical spectrum covers house and techno, with forays into disco, soul, funk, broken beat, jazz and afrobeat, in a flexible register that emphasizes transitions and the storytelling of the dancefloor. On the production side, Tama Sumo released several tracks with Prosumer, including Play Up / Brothers, Sisters in 2008, Alien Mutts in 2009 and the EP Rarified in 2010, as well as the Panoramabar #2 mix in 2009 on Ostgut Ton. She also participated in Süd Electronic's label venture alongside Lakuti and Portable, extending in studio a trajectory built primarily in clubs, between the Berlin queer scene and international invitations.
