Saint Etienne

Formed in Croydon, Greater London, in 1990, Saint Etienne brings together Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs as an English trio that emerged from the early-1990s indie‑dance scene. Nourished by club culture, 1960s British pop, melodic house, synthpop and dance‑pop, the project took shape when Sarah Cracknell became the lead vocalist after the initial recordings. Saint Etienne came to prominence with Foxbase Alpha (1991), developed a more narrative songwriting approach on So Tough (1993), then broadened their palette with Tiger Bay (1994), where folk references intersect with more experimental electronic production. Good Humor (1998) marked a shift toward a more organic pop sound, while Sound of Water (2000), recorded in Berlin with To Rococo Rot, moved toward ambient atmospheres. With Finisterre (2002) and Tales from Turnpike House (2005), Saint Etienne reinforced an aesthetic tied to London, cinema and urban memory. Over the years the band has collaborated with Étienne Daho, Richard X, Xenomania and Kero Kero Bonito, and continued its course with Words and Music by Saint Etienne (2012), Home Counties (2017), I’ve Been Trying to Tell You (2021), The Night (2024) and International (2025).
